Hi - my husband was self employed 10 months ago and all is finished. We were of the opinion that he could not claim for any benefit for 2 years. Thats fine (not really) but anyway. He has since been diagnosed with v high blood pressure and carpel tunnel - We have now been told by friends that he would be eligible for disabilty benefit or allowance as he wil be on medication for life for the bp - he is waiting for consultant appt for the carpel tunnel.
What do we do or where do we start looking for infor -

Any info would be appreciated - thanks

Illness Benefit is based on PRSI contributions - depending on how long he was self-employed for, your husband may not be eligible. An application form for illness benefit is available at the GP (it's attached to the Social Welfare medical certificate).

Disability Allowance is a long-term payment based on a means-test and medical criteria. Application form available from the Welfare website.

Check out www.welfare.ie and follow the links for "a person with a disability or illness" where you'll get more information on both of the above schemes.

thanks for that - we went into welfare office this morning - he signed on for jobseekers benefit/allowance as he was told to sign on anyway - may not get anything - we queried disability allowance/benefit - not applicable to him we were told -
Is illness benefit different - I'm not sure what i'm asking or what i'm asking for ?

If he has signed on, then he has declared himself available for work and looking for work.

Illness Benefit is a short-term payment for people who, generally speaking, are sick from work.

Disability Allowance is a long-term payment for people who are unable to work and who pass the means test.

Disability Benefit is the old name for Illness Benefit.
