Hi there, Me and Mr Wishbone, and our two little wishbones are heading off to Castlebar for the weekend! We're leaving Dublin at 4 and will need to stop somewhere for dinner, 2 hours or so from Dublin. Can anyone suggest anywhere cheap and cheerful, maybe around Roscommon??? I'm not a big greasy chip fan, but kids wouldn't mind of course so somewhere with a mix - good pub or other...?

2 good choices competing side by side in Tarmonbarry - Keenan's and the Purple Onion, the former a bit more casual, the latter a bit more formal. Both with excellent reputations.

Thanks! So is the N5 your recommended route to Castlebar rather than via Athlone?

Purple Onion is excellent, wouldn't have it down as formal though. Lovely staff and delicious food.

The N5 is the only route in my opinion, great road to Mulllingar. When you get to Longford, head for Sligo and on the 3rd roundabout take the first exit (McDonalds is there) and with this you avoid most of Longford town.

By the way I am in West Sligo (about 30 miles from Castlebar ) and be ready for hail, sleet and snow, it is at it all day but not sticking

Thanks guzzler, we've packed the woollies!! Thanks for the directions etc, very helpful! All the best, Wishbone
