Dimmer downlights with no noise

Hi,

I found some other threads on this subject but they don't appear to deal directly with my concern... which is... is it possible to get a noiseless (or at least very quiet) dimmer solution for downlights (recessed spotlights) ? My electrician is planning to put in low voltage (ie. with transformer) regular (ie. non-CFL) downlights. We want dimmer capability but don't want to hear noise/buzzing (eg. from switches, lights, transformers). Is this feasible ? Are there brands of lights/dimmers which generate less or no noise ?

Many thanks

You could use mains voltage GU10 downlights which don't need transformers, reducing the problem.
Make sure to use the best quality dimmer switch you can get and match the size to the load.
If you want total silence you could always fit a remote dimmer pack, but that would be expensive.

with halogens its best to go above load with the dimmer switch,ie 300 watts of light 400 watt dimmer.
