I am just back from the states and have purchased a digital camera. The charger has a standard US plug. Will this work ok here with an adapter or do I need to worry about converting voltage?

A standard US plug wont work here. The voltage is different. You will need to buy an adapter. Some electrical shops will have something to suit.
As I mentioned elsewhere though, I was having difficulty getting an adapter that did not have that "well" into which the US plug would first have to go before inserting the actual sockets. This type of adapter would not suit the charger I had.
Eventually I was convinced by an assistant in Maplins that a regular electric shaver adapter that you get here for 3 or 4 Euro will do the trick. And so far it has done fine. But you of course must make up your own mind on whether that's the option for you.

Automatic voltage switching is fairly standard on the camera power supplies now.

Have a look at the transformer on the US plug cable and see if it has 110-240 on it.

If yes standard shaver plug will work.
