Difficulty reinstalling AVG antivirus software.

Been away for a few days and on my return my AVG software wouldn't update ( set to automatically update at 12.0 every day ). Decided to uninstall, reboot and reinstall but as I try to reinstall the free AVG antivirus software I get the message " Another version of AVG 7.1 is installed on my computer and to uninstall it first " , even though it is not showing up under programes or under Add/Remove programs in the Control panel . Anyone any ideas as to how I can resolve this issue?

there is an avg(something).dll in windows I think. search for avg*.* on your hard drive and paste the results in here

your workaround is to change the last letter in the suspect filename so that avgloader.dll becomes avgloader.dl1 and the installer cannot find it and chunters on

will it update manually? if so just up date once and maybe it will start updating again automatically from then on. I had this exact problem with norton and changed to avg. just updates now when the computer opens up.

No joy at all so far - I can't find anything left on my computer relating to AVG despite extensive searches re AVG, Grisoft, avg*.* - still being told as I try to re install AVG that another version exists and to uninstall it. Googled problem and tried other suggestions but to no avail. I'm using AVAST at the moment but found AVG to be excellent over the last few years and would prefer to be still using it.

Have a look at this: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?2,28206,backpage=,sv (http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?2,28206,backpage=,sv=)=. It might help!

Thanks hansov - will check that out when I get a chance.

Go to your registry,i.e type regedit in your run box. go to HKCR\Installer\Products, then scroll down list of GUIDS. look in right hand panel for mention of AVG and delete key. This guid is what your installer sees and is why it tells you that another version already exists.

HKLM\Software\Grisoft is the convention ....surely

delete the entire Grisoft key is what I would do.

HappyBudda is correct about many installers linking via an obscure GUID in the registry to the installation. Obviously hacking the registry can be risky if you don't know what you're doing and sometimes even if you do! Make backups of any registry keys that you are going to delete first. Try running CrapCleaner and deleting anything that looks like it could be related to AVG. Obviously do an CrapCleaner backup beforehand!

Thanks Clubman, and yes it is risky.
Just removing that HKLM key would still leave the products unique identifier behind in CLASSES ROOT.

When I go in to the registry I don't see HKCR\Installer\Products. I can go in to HKEY classes roots, HKEY current user,HKEY local machine, HKEY users, HKEY current config. I have had a look in each but dont see anything related to AVG.

HKCR is abbr. of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. So you click on the + to the left of that. Scroll down to Installer. Click the + to the left of that. Scroll down to Products and you should see a list of numbers like 0B79C053C7D38EE4AB4A00CB3B5D2472(this is the guid), scroll down through each of them and in the left hand panel you should see Product Name (Whatever it is AVg). Delete that .
If you cant find that you can right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and search for Products. If you still can't find it then you should prob stay away from registry altogether and try to download another free antivirus software.
Good luck!

Try CrapCleaner - it would be a lot simpler!

I run this on a daily basis and it hasn't made any difference to my problem with AVG. I have also run TweakNow Regcleaner and again this has made no difference either .

Found ten items under products and none refer to avg, Grisoft or anything else that seems to relate to the AVG antivirus product . At this point I think I will stick with Avast. Many thanks to everyone for their contributions.

different solution. if you purchase avg ( around €33 for 26months) they have backup solutions for paid installation. might work.
