Difficulty in sourcing insurance for 100 year old house

Hi ,
We are looking to take out a new policy for a semi detatched house that is approximately 100 years old . There is a protection order on teh fromt of the house , its not a stately house , just a regular house on the street ! The main insurance companies will not provide cover for the house , 2 stating that it must have been rewired and replumbed in the last 25 years. The house is in perfect condition and has been the family home forever .
The face that there is a preservation order on it also seems to be a deterrent, we are not even talking a Downton Abbey type building !!
At present, there is one company , Cover Centre Insurance , which will provide cover, have Googled them.
The company that have been the insurers now have to check with their New polcy dept as the house is now being insured in a new name .

Any advice welcome please on other companies that may provide cover .

Hi Creditworthy I also own a home which is am listed building and is over 100 years old and I find that most companies won't quote. There are some specialist companies which cover this type of property but I got sky high quotes from them. In the end I got a good rate from FBD and have stuck with them for this reason. You will need to ring them and ask for a quote. There is no point on using the on-line application because you will find the computer always says no!
 
Our house is over 200 years old and is insured with RSA. The first time we got it insured, we had to get an engineer to do a structural survey as it is built on rock and not foundations. it had been completely renovated, so there was no issue on electrics or plumbing. As Gordon says, talk to a broker, they will know who is in the market for old houses.
 
Thank you all very much. Actually spoke to FBD and they, as well as others said they could not insure as the house wasn't re wired and replumbed in the last 25 years and that an engineers report might not even be enough for them to offer insurance !

Our house is well over 100 years old and 80m from a river.
Nobody would quote us online. When we called a few of the insurance companies and got talking to a person they all quoted us. PRices were no different to similar more modern houses. They just asked about the condition of the house, had it ever flooded and how far weer we away from the river.
Talk to a person or a broker is good advice.
Also ask the person who was in the house before you for their insurance details. That company will have all the details on the house already and will quote you.
 
Thank you for your replies . Am awaiting a quote from a broker, the company that insured the house previously have come bac k with a quote that was well above the existing premium , saying they were really only quoting as it had previously insured the house. When contacting the companies directly, we have had almost the complete opposite experience , where by they were just not going to insure a house this old. Hopefully the broker quote will be somewhat more favourable, still above what we had hoped to pay but at the moment, its the only option. There is a preservation order on part of the house, a previous council house, which is also driving up the price. Thank you for your replies , will also contact those you mentioed just above , tomorrow.
 
No, it's the fact that there's a preservation order on the front of the house.
Even with more recent plumbing and rewiring, neither of which actually needs to be done, one company said even with that done, their company could not guarantee they would insure it. Looking likely we will have to go with one company where the premium is 3x times the current premium !

Your original post said it was down to electrical and plumbing. While insuring my previous 1940's build (unprotected), I had to clarify that the plumbing and electrical systems had been replaced. There are more than 40,000 protected structures in Ireland, not all homes but not all struggling to obtain insurance.
