Did Interest relief exist pre 2003?

Question is in the title.

I know that it began to be applied at source at the end of 2002 but did it exist in a different form before then or was that just the start of it all?

Yes. It has existed for years. It was not deducted at source though.

A PAYE worker would have been given additional tax-free allowances.

A self-employed person would have claimed the relief in their tax return

Do you happen to have any idea where I could find reliable information about the rates and ceilings for mortgage interest relief prior to 2003? I don't seem to be able to find that info on the revenue website or anywhere else on the net.
 
If this is to claim tax back on those years don't waste your time. You won't be entitled to claim any relief pre-2006
