Like the poor girl before the judge I've no idea how big certain gemstones are. I don't even have an engagement ring. Could someone tell me if you give your wife jewellery long before the celtic tiger, why should they be used to pay off part of your debts?

One is entitled to buy cars, houses, property, jewellery when times are going well and give them as gifts and it surely doesn't go to pay your debts if later you get into trouble.

Presumably some of the debts are in respect of joint assets so the wife also has debts that need to be repaid. If the gifts were to other people and well before any money issues, I don't think they can be reclaimed.
