Dell printers

Aren't Dell printers rebadged Lexmarks? Lexmark cartridges tend to be expensive. With any printer you need to factor in the cost of consumables (e.g. ink cartridges) which can often cost a significant chunk of the original printer cost!

Yeah, the Dell inkjets that I’ve seen look exactly like lexmarks.

There’s a glowing review on amazon from someone: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B000E8ZVHK/ref=cm_cr_dp_pt/002-9659427-6202448?%5Fencoding=UTF8&n=172282&s=electronics

Yup printer consumables are where they make their money, often selling the printer at very low prices to tie you in to theirs.

Seems a bit pricy and bulky for home use. You can now get colour laser printers for pretty much the same price or cheaper. Take a look at dabs.com or komplett.ie, the customer reviews on these sites are helpful too.

I suppose it depends on what the printer is for, occasional or heavy duty use?

Unless you really want the other bits and are limited for space you are generally better off with a stand alone printer. I have used the HP laser networkable printers for about 5 years now and find the quality really good and they are very economical. You will get a HP for about the sampel price if you shop around. I have tried the recycled toner carts on and off but when we actually counted the pages (about 2 years ago) we were getting way more pages per cart. with the HP originals than the recycled ones. We send the empties for recycling via the Temple Street CH Appeal so that they get the cash not HP.

Hi I bought a Dell 5000, with which Im very happy, and they also threw in a printer for free..the dell printer cartridges are horrendously expensive in comparison to for example, epson or hp.I have never used the dell printer for this reason.BTW if your looking for cheaper printer cartridges in general, Ihave found inkjet.ie to be very good. I have no relationship with the company in question.IMHO, your'e better off getting a printer from a company that specialises in printing rather than computer sales, you'll get a better deal.

Depends on how many pages they say it will print, with HP there are two two different capacity toner carts sold, a 'light' one and a 'maximum capacity' one with the 'heavy' use one being better value per page, we buy the heavy use one for c. €70 each, these promise to print 3500 pages at 5% coverage, we have been mean enough to count and find this to be about right.

I would imagine that there are sites out there that summarise the total cost of ownership (including the cost of consumables) of various types and maybe even makes/models of printer.

Originally Dell printers were made by lexmar but now theya re completely there own. Look at all the new models and they are pretty different to lexmark. I've heard great things about the lasers, colour and b&w. The low end (free) inkjet printers are expnsive to run but fine if you only print occaisionally. If you get high capasity cartridges the cost per page is fine.

I think if you search on the net you can find spurious cartridges for sale or refil kits etc

I got a dell printer, but only because it was €25 including two full carts, when the carts empty I'll finish with it.
My main printer is an Epsom R200, no complaints, it has six separate carts and although they use the ink quite quickly - I mostly print A4 photos, the generic carts are cheap and do just as good a job as the originals.
I just bought some replacement carts from 7dayshop at 99p a pop, now thats cheap...ex P+P
