Dell monitor not showing full screen

Hi wonder if anyone has any quick tips before I resort to Dell support. Unpacked my new Dell PC and 19" flat screen monitor. All cables and plugs are connected in the right place, but when I started it up the screen is off centre and I have a 2 inch black area to the right. The windows start button is off to the left out of sight ! Any suggestions?
 
Use the monitor's built-in controls to position the default screen image. You might then want to go into your windows control panel's display section and choose the screen resolution that most appeals to you.
