Delay in mortgage interest relief rebate?

Hi,
We discovered before Christmas that we hadn't been claiming mortgage interest relief on our home - mortgage was taking out mid-04. Anyway, applied for TRS and then also for a rebate on the previous years. Application was sent in mid-Feb and no word back. I'm wondering if yesterday's announcement re: a freeze on Mort.Int.Relief payments will affect my claim.
Has anyone claimed before and how long can I expect to wait for a reply/rebate?

i would call into a tax office and find out asap

We are in same position and just wondering if anyone has heard anything??

Limelawn - did you get anything yet from the tax office?? We applied after you but havent heard anything as yet.

ring 1890 46 36 26
with your pps number and they will advise you.

due to the many changes there will be a significant delay to a lot of new requests for trs and rebates of trs.

You can register for an account on www.ros.ie

You will nead your tax free allowance cert for the pin..

You cn check there under correspondance.

was in a similar situation. There is a significant backlog, but you will get what is owed to you. In my case we had moved house end of 07 and never applied for TRS. I sent in the application in Jan this year and as I hadnt heard anything by mid april I rang the tax office on the numbers given above. They confirmed on the phone exactly what I was due for refund and that the TRS would be applied in my April mortgage payment. They send the refund to the lender. For some reason they send the refunds in batches so had just sent the refund for what I was owed for 09 to the lender at the end of March and would send the amount owed for 08 the following month.
I rang the lender and they confirmed they had received the rebate and had automatically taken it off my capital. If I wanted a refund for the overpayment I would have to explicitly request it (PTSB). They advised to ring again at the end of next month to request that all my 08 overpayments are refunded or else they would by default use the sum to reduce the capital.

Takes time, but you will get the mony due. Up to you whether you want to use it to pay against capital or get a refund. But you must advise your lender.

Hi, I filled in the necessary forms and revenue approved my rebate, on the forms I directed that the refund be deposited into another institution. However the lender took this money and applied against the principal. They continue to insist that that is the procedure for all rebates and I cannot have the money forwarded to myself. Can I approach the financial regulator about this. To my mind it is blatantly going against my express directions to deposit the rebate.

you can only get it back if it is for previous years.
if it is for the current year you cannot get it back.

Hi thanks for your reply, I dont understand how they can hold back any of the refund for any given period. In that case why dont they just offset all the relief on a continual monthly basis.

Just an addition to this query. I bought my first house 2 years ago and only claimed the TRS a few months ago. I got the letter yesterday from PTSB stating that they had received confirmation of TRS and giving me the new mortgage amount.

How long should it take before I get the back pay from the past 2 years? Do I get a cheque or is it deposited into the account I pay the mortgage from?

i was told it was likely to take at least 2 months to get a refund!
