defamation on the internet

Just a quick question,

If one was defamed or libel on a message board, who is liable for the post? I would suspect the authour would be in trouble? Would the mods/admins of the board also be in trouble as a result of a libel posted by a member of a board?

Also, does deletion/hiding of a message/thread absolve the mods/admins of liability?

Not really they only seem to deal with cases where the authour and pulisher are the same person. I wanted to ask as I am starting up some boards atm. I was looking for views of current mods/admins. Thanks.
