Any software I've tried has done a bad job of converting the company logo which is in the Word Doc as a header giving it a watermark effect.

ah no, openoffice from www.openoffice.org is free and will output a .doc as a .pdf, it will replace MS Office more or less totally unless you use a lot of MS Access

I use "paperport pro 9" for making and manipulating pdf's.

There are also some free utilities out there on the download sites but most are "nag ware" with loads of pop up ads etc.

I use PDF995 to convert any on screen item to PDF. You can download it at www.pdf995.com. Can use without payment if you want to put up with adverts popping up each time you use or buy it for $9.95 or with other products from the suite for $19.95

you can also register an account with www.adobe.com and they let you convert documents to PDF for free , no adverts or anything , you just upload the file to their site and they email the conversion straight away
