Anyone got experience of being in Prague in early December ?

Ryanair flights are cheap & some hotels have good deals too but is it absolutely freezing ? Was in Krakow Nov last year, temp about -3* but snow was beautiful, wonder how it compares.

It's good to be prepared so any advice welcome.

Was there for xmas a few years back.
There are huge xmas markets that are great to spend the day at and a really beautiful city to boot.
Food and drink reasonable also thats pretty much all you need in a break.
Highly recommended.
One piece of advice find out the standard cab fare from airport into Prague as we got caught by the cabbie with the old first time in Prague? and later found out we were charged double for the privelege.
Enjoy

Friends of mine have been to Prague in December and I believe it is beautiful at that time of year. Have a look on Tripadvisor.com you will find loads of information there about the markets and tips and hints from others. Enjoy it!

Was in Prague in December a few years back and while it was very low in temperature it didn't feel any colder than here, it's a different type of cold - doesn't seem to have the wind chill factor that here has, a still kind of cold. I noticed that none of the locals seemed to wear gloves. I went with scarves, gloves, big boots etc. The hotel central heating was stifling.

Went to Prague for four nights in early December last year, very beautiful at this time of year. Xmas markets really lovely, picked up some unusual decorations, atmosphere was lovely, not commercialised like here. City is a must see. Its very easy to get around by tram and would advise ou to look up Prague airport and book a private bus transfer, much cheaper than a private taxi. Anyway, enjoy. This year going to Edinburgh for a very different Xmas experience

Thanks for all the feedback.
Any hotel recommendations ? There are so many hotels that it's taking a while to make a choice & it would be helpful to narrow it down a bit.

Try here www.andelshotel.com , about a 20 min walk to old town but a pleasant walk along the Vultava, alternatively you can take the underground which is right beside the hotel. Prague is lovely at that time of year you might have snow and temp should be around 0 degrees, nothing too extreme. They'll probably have the ski rinks dotted around the city again and the Christmas markets are nice to stroll around.

Was there in January just gone, as said above its very cold but no real wind chill unless you're out on the bridge.

We stayed in Savic Hotel, right in the centre, about 2mins walk to the main square and the big clock (apologies for the ignorance but just can't think of the correct name for these landmarks at the minute, too much drink taken at the weekend)

It cost 99e per room per night including continental breakfast. And ranked number 4 of 614 hotels in Prague!

Stunning hotel in every way.

A word of warning though, food & drink in the main touristy places are even more expensive than Dublin, quite a shock when I thought 1e a pint :-(

HI
i was in Prague last year in mid dec, it was absolutely fantastic, would def go back there again.

we stayed in an apartment as i found it would be better to be able to make tea, soup, lunches as it was so cold out, tea in Prague is awful so i brought my own Barrys tea bags! the apartment was around the corner from the big clock(cant think of the name either)

this is the apartment we stayed in, they even picked us up from the airport for free: http://www.prague-city-apartments.cz/product/about_en_RESIDENCE_MASNA.html

i did find it very cold, one tip wear leggings under jeans and buy uggs! they saved me! walking across charles bridge is freezing!

I enjoyed Praque so much I just have to go back and as a previous poster has said Andel's hotel is fab and I think their apartments are now ready if you prefer. There's a huge Tesco right beside, Metro, tram and bus within 100 metres of hotel.
You don't need a taxi from the airport, just get an integrated daily ticket for 4 Euros (or a 3 day ticket) at the office just as you walk out the doors of the airport. The 119 bus will be waiting outside
Enjoy!!!!!!

Hotel Savic is booked out but Andels is still available. It looks lovely to me but can you tell me more about the bathrooms. Are the walls glass ?

Two of my party are in their 60's and I wonder if it's too mod for them !

Presume the metro is easy to get the hang of.

Can I jump in there, I stayed at Andels, rooms are lovely. Just about the glass doors. First night I stayed there I woke in the middle of the night ( after a couple of pints ) and I walked into the door .. I didnt see it. It is a quiet area with a shopping centre nearby and a couple of restaurants and a bar around the corner. The hotel bar was expensive and quiet with no atmosphere. On the walk into the centre the church with the child of prague statue was on the left

Not as far as I remember, one part is glass but it is smoked/frosted or the likes, it's not clear glass.

You get a good breakfast there, great choice.

As for it being too mod, sure it can never be too mod, you never know they might find it funky !

Yes it is. Just make sure tickets are bought in advance, it's an honour system but the inspectors are all over the place in plain clothes and IME they were checking quite regularly, on the spot fine for no ticket, the concierge will tell you more.

Thanks guys. I like the idea of a bit funky but my sisters are a bit more prim & proper......I'm the youngest by far & they love to travel, with me doing all the organizing.

One of them is looking for the Child of Prague church, so that sounds good.

Has anyone been to the opera ? I notice that Carmen is on but I wonder do you need to dress up to go. I'm not an opera buff but I thought when in Prague etc...

They were between operas when I was there so nothing to go see

However I did ask at the hotel & they said that dressing up. i.e. blacktie is not a requirement, there will be other people there in neat casual clothing but there will also be the glammed up to the nines folk also. Whatever you're comfortable with really as long as its not jeans & t-shirt.

Tickets are really cheap & you can buy them from the opera house, ticket/tourist office is open all day.

Thanks to everybody for their suggestions. I stayed in the Hilton Atrium and I must say it was lovely. Breakfast great & it's quite central.

Drinks in the bar are terribly expensive. We were so knackered after walking all day that we got lazy & just stayed in........lovely atmosphere but boy did it cost us !

Stayed in the Union Hotel in Prague for 4 nights this time last year. Rate was so cheap with Alpha Rooms and hotel was lovely, breakfast very substantial, overall terrific value for what we paid.

Prague at Xmas is so beautifu and we were lucky to have some snow which added to the atmosphere. Markets magical and lovely old fashioned little shops. Be sure to visit the castle and if you have any time do take a trip out of the city to a beautiful town called Ceskey Krumlov, its just as beautiful as Prague but not so many tourists. We are going back in January and will stay there.
