Deceased bank account 16 years on

My mother had a statement sent to her last week with an account in my father's name which has a few bob in it. My mother is in a home and I am her Care Representitive as per HSE requirements. Can I just type a letter out to the bank and get my mother to sign it requesting this account now be closed and the proceeds to go into her account ? Do I need to include my father's death cert or is the legal requirements going to be a lot of hassle ? The amount is 2k so it's worth chasing.
 
It depends on the bank, when my Dad passed away, one bank, where the staff knew us very well transferred things to my Mam's name without too much bother. Another bank where they had a a savings account required a death cert and forms to be signed. I think it's easier to assume the latter.
