De-register from reporting CGT

I registered for CGT at a time I had made a gain on shares but later in the same tax year I ended up making an overall loss (fortunately small)

I have no interest in carrying forward a small loss to the next year - can you de-register for CGT ?
 
yes you can. go into ROS and de-register yourself. If you don't have a ROS account either get one or send a letter to your tax office requesting de-registration.

I went to the manage tax registrations in My Accounts and it says “ceased” already - there was no CGT to pay (payment is due before filing) I didn’t make a payment looks like Revenue chose to cease it anyway

That's the way it normally works. I complete at least a few dozen CGT returns each year and I can't remember ever having to cease a CGT registration for anyone.

So if no tax is due and no payment is made “in year” they just de-register you from filing a return

No, they register you for the applicable year and immediately deregister you from then on, but they expect a return for the year for which you're registered.
 
Ok thats a bit confusing I registered for 2024 but its now showing as ceased currently as of Dec 2024 - so they still expect a return before end of oct 2025 for 2024

Of course they expect a return from you once you've registered.

If you've disposed of a property in 2024, they'll separately have your ppsn recorded from there and will expect a return on foot of that.

If in doubt, consider professional assistance.

Ok so even though it says ceased they will expect a return if you registered for CGT - i registered for capital gains purely solely because I made money on shares but subsequently later in the year I made a small overall loss - I also heard Revenue may send out reminders to file so I will await a reminder to do so or reach out to check with them next yearr
