I saw this on the Irish Times website

5 Debit/credit card
Because of data protection, Revenue will not retain card details, so property tax will be deducted on date the return is filed. For those filing manually, this is before November 7th,
for those filing online, it is November 23rd.

Our data protection rules need to be reviewed if this is the case.

I think the issue is Revenue's interpretation of the rules, rather than the rules themselves.

Its nonsense of course, hotels routinely retain customers' credit card details and charge them on check-out. I purchased something online this morning and, as I had previously selected a 'save my card details' option, I didn't have to re-enter my credit card info.

I'm just amazed at how many people chose to pay by card earlier this year (nearly half), surely the salary deduction just makes it so much more affordable and easy?

Is it not very easy for people to just switch to that or the other payment options rather than getting themselves in a tizzy?

Paying the LPT by credit card also incurs an additional charge of 1.9% (something like that)
I too have my credit card saved on sites like Amazon 48 etc.

As far as I'm aware they are correct. The basic principle is that you store only data that is required for your business, once a transaction has been completed there is not need for them to hold on to such details and consequently they are correct in not holding on to such information.

Should they choose to offer a service of holding your credit card details for future transactions and you agree to it, that would be a different matter. But I would imagine that the Revenue would be a prime target for hacking, so the less they hold on their website the better!

Revenue's own publicity & public statements earlier this year conflated salary deduction with punishment for evasion so its no surprise that people are wary of utilising this option.
