Dark Wood wardrobe-how to prepare for painting?

Yet another paint related question.

I have a old dark wood wardrobe that completely covers one wall of a medium double bedroom. I hate how it makes the room look and would love to paint it 'antique white' or similar.

How do I go about this job. Can I sand most of it with a belt sander and do the hard to reach bits by hand. Then apply a primer, is this right? And then a wood paint?

What brush (if indeed a brush) do I use to avoid visible strokes when its dry?

Any tips much appreciated. Don't want to mess it up as OH is apalled by the idea of painting over wood!
