My dad dies intestate and the family home is just lying idle except for the odd visit by myself and 2 brothers. Who pays this charge, we have done nothing about selling the house and assume we all jointly own an equal share in it, do we pay? Thanks for advice
Well one of you had better pay it. There is an exemption on the website for a certain time period in the case of a death. Once outside that time period you are liable for penalties on the amount and on a sale of the property the tax has to be paid plus penalties. Better to deal with it now. And don't forget the NPPR.
If you father died intestate then you and your two brothers now own it.
Therefore ye are liable for the household charge and as Bronte rightly pointed out, NPPR also.
While it may be a pain having to pay the €300 now (HHC = €100, NPPR=€200) it will save you an awful lot of money (and pain) down the road if you all decide to sell.
