Although the signs are ridiculous the bikes are going to be brilliant. This is just a report on the bikes in Toulouse. The area of Toulouse covered by the bike stations is roughly the same as Dublin.
There is up to 16 bikes in a row and at the head of these is a large JC D sign straight off the path with no gap.One side has advertising and the other has a local map and a touchscreen to administer the bikes.
You insert your credit/debit card and they take 150 euro deposit. You then scroll down to finish and select your bike number. The first 1/2 an hour is free and the next 1/2 is 50 cent. After that it is 1 euro an hour. The stations are in use from 05 30am to 2am.They seem to be on a magnetic lock and release system.
The bikes come with 3 gears, basket and a lock that you take the key with you when you use the lock.
I can see a lot of people getting on/off buses to cycle the rest of way into/out of town for exercise and they will be so handy to cycle within town.In Toulouse they have their octopus cards which they hold up against touchscreen and away they go.We can just dream.
The streets seem so much safer and calmer for cycling over there but I think they will be a great addition when they do turn up here.

In the Dublin situation, the only thing being ridden is the taxpayers.
