Customs on Ebay items

Do any experienced ebay users find their packages are more often stopped by Irish customs & have to pay the custom duty, when they come originate from the US or the UK?
I'm looking at the 2 similiar items and wondering should I choose the UK seller over the US? US item is a bit cheaper.
 
There is no custom duty when country of origin is the UK (none within the EU)
 
I had a pacel from the US stopped before, it was being delivered to my work address. When I got in touch and told them it was a private purchase, they just released it without charge. Wasn't an expensive item which would probably be a factor though.

Figure out what the customs charge would be, and if the US one + customs is close to the price from the UK, then go for it.

I've seen a few Hong Kong sellers who ship from the UK too.
