Hi,

I am working but my wife is not.
She stays at home and minds my 1 year old son.
My question is how many tax credits can I claim?

Should I be entitled to:
my married tax credit 3,260
my wifes married tax credit 3,260
Home Carers Tax Credit 770
paye tax credit 1,490
my wifes paye tax credit 1,490
10,270?

The married tax credit is made up of 2 * 1630 so NO
Home Carers Tax Credit 770 - Yes
paye tax credit 1,490 - Yes
my wifes paye tax credit 1,490 - No your wife has to earn an income in order to claim this credit. It is not transferable

You can also increase the SRCOP to 41,000

You are entitled to the following credits;

Married persons - €3,260
Home carers - €770
Your PAYE tax credit - €1,490

There is only one married tax credit available to a couple not two and the PAYE tax credit only applies to a person in PAYE employment, so if your wife doesn't work she doesn't get it (you must be in PAYE employment to get yours too).

There are other tax credits such as refuse charges, medical/dental expenses, rent etc that you may qualify for. Tax relief at source applies to medical insurance and mortgage interest so you won't see them on your tax cert. Have a look at www.revenue.ie to see what credits and reliefs are available and look through other threads on this forum for an idea too.

Sorry, crossed with asdgf's post

Thanks Guys,
I also have VHI as Benefit in Kind.
If my yearly VHI fee is 1200 for example, would I be able to claim for tax credit and if so how much?
Thanks again guys for your help!
