Credit Card Payments for Small Cafe

My friend has a small cafe and does some catering for a large compnay next door. They have now told her that they can no longer pay by cash/ cheque. She offered them bank details to pay by that method, but they said they could pay by credit card.

Can anyone suggest how she could facilitate such payments? I think from memory that a credit card machine is particularly expensive given that she would only use it once or twice a month

seeing as it's just the one contract customer that wants to settle their bills by credit card then I imagine setting themselves up on paypal.ie would be the solution, the company can then pay the cafe online for their orders or the cafe owner could take the details and pay himself sending them the receipt.

That's a great idea with Paypal. How does it work? She creates an invoice and he pays it online?

Yes, fairly simple stuff, she creates a payment request/invoice and they pay it online, think there's 3% surcharge but a damn sight cheaper than having a credit card machine from the banks with their extra surcharges as well, as Clubman says paypal.ie will have all the info in plain English.

Paypal fees are astronomical. Seriously, credit card is much better I think.

For small amounts (anything between €0-€2.5k per month I think?) PayPal will take €3.75 in every €100. That's quite high to be honest. Has your friend got a price from the banks for a merchant terminal yet?

I find it very odd that the customer company will not pay by cash, cheque or bank transfer.

I presume that they don't pay all their suppliers by credit card.

I would echo this post.
A company "only being able to pay by credit card" sets off alarm bells in my head. I think she should be wary of extending too much credit to this customer. Yes a credit card can be useful in certain situations as it gives you an extra 30 days but for a large company to start claiming it's the only game in town is laughable (and disturbing)

no cash -they dont have any no cheques- afraid they will bounce and employees will start asking questions I would not give credit to such a company set up. cash or paypal only if i were you.

Just a quick thought...are these transactions entirely above board-i.e. is the cafe owner putting these "nixers" throught the books?
Perhaps the larger company wants to regularise an irregular arrangement?
Unlikely but possible
