Noise coming from upstairs floors.

We have a 2 bed terrace house about 20 yrs old and this last few months I have noticed that when the heat comes on in the house at night there is some noises coming from the upstairs floor. The heating pipes run under the floor and I assume that the joists are expanding and contracting with the heat coming on and the cold nights out side. The noise is like a really heavy creaking door closing

Is there any thing I can do about this?

One of the floors in the bedrooms has floorboards exposed, I could carpet this and it may cover up some of the sound.

Thanks for any advice

It is almost undoubtedly the timbers in the floors expanding due to the heat of the pipes. Laying carpet may reduce the noise, but the only way to reduce it even further might be to insulate the underfloor pipes. With carpet on top you won't get any heating benefit from the underfloor pipes anyway.
