Covering a Slate floor

Hi folks, need a bit of advice:
We have a slate floor in our front room which is unsealed and the mortar between the slates is very sandy so consequently it's a nightmare keeping it clean. The floor is obviously also cold on the feet We are both fed up with the sight of it so I was thinking of laying a DPM then 3/4" - 1" exterior ply then a different floor covering, possibly vinyl ( we have cats!)
From the sites I've found whilst Googling, this seems feasible but just wondered if anyone has done something similar before I go buying all the stuff.

Would appreciate any thoughts etc.

Thanks
Justin

If you put a covering down over the slate, don't frget that you will be rising the level of the floor. This migth cause a step between that room and hallway or ajoining rooms. Also ,the door handles and light switches will be much lower and you migth even need to remove door to shave a bit off.

Would you be better off removing the slate and then putting in new floor coverings? Just a thought.
