Have you looked at the Ikea Billy range? (here).
You might be able to put together a unit from what they offer and assemble it yourself. They have a range of finishes and an advantage is that they also have doors for their units (solid, glass and half-and-half) which might be good for your purposes.
You can "plan" your unit with their planner, too (here).
An idea could be to use the Billy range or similar to build the basic structure and then add to the front some beading and fancy woodwork. I have done it before and there are load of such products to upgrade boring functional kit to something unique.I actually bought an Ikea Billy unit for our utility room (holds books and other important things like spirits!). It's fine and does the job but was looking for something a bit classier & sturdier for the livingroom and would prefer something built-in rather than free standing as the kids might pull it down!

That's a good idea, thanks. This site shows how also http://www.ehow.com/how_8051820_make-ikea-bookcase-look-builtin.html (maybe it's time to learn how to hang that picture!)
