Cost for Painter to Paint Hallway

I just got a quote from a painter to paint the hall of our house. The house is just a regular 2-bed terraced housed, average size - not particularly big and located in Dublin. The hall we want painted would include the first floor landing area too and the banister and would include ceilings and skirting and door frames.

The price I was quoted was 1200 euro (excluding materials). I think this seems mad expensive, but I have never used a painter before, so perhaps this is normal enough? Does anyone have advice on whether this price is crazy high or just normal?

I really was shocked when I got the quote!

wow.i can think of better things to do with 1200e.why not have a paint party.invite some friends and do it together.

That's mad!
I'd do it for a lot less than that, not a painter but it's not that hard to do a good job if you take your time.

I got the entire downstairs of a double fronted house incl Hall stairs and landing for €1000 a year or so ago. If you do a secarch on painter dublin you should be able to find his name.

Does seem expensive alright.

Did they say how long it would take?
I have used a painter and he charges approx 160 per day and i cant see what you are getting painted taking more than 2 or 3 days?

In fairness wood can me more awkard to paint if you are using gloss paint and it has to be striipped down etc but you didnt mention any of that. Either way 1200 seem very expensive to me

We got kitchen (4m X 5m), with all the knicky knack presses to go round, underneath them etc and living room/dining area (6m X 3.5m), with walls, window boards, skirting and doors in both rooms for €600 labour. The quote you have seems way off the mark. BTW that price is from last March 2009.

Hi Pantone, the price of the job really depends on what needs doing.

If you are going to have 2 men in your house for 4 days preparing surfaces, filling, sanding and then painting it can take longer than meets the eye.

I have cleaned stairs down before and believe me if it isn't done right you will regret it.

I have seen very fast "painters" blasting paint on walls and charging very little for their work, when the paint starts to peel off within 6 months the price does seem expensive.

I know a painter who charges €150 per day and that is what he charges me for his time.

I never get painters by the job it is always by the day,

Why not have a paint party.invite some friends and do it together.

LOL

give us more info... are you changing colours, are wall in good condition etc... If walls are in good condition and you are just painting all round, then think 500euro max would be approx correct. Get reference also.. i know someone who got painter in and he didnt cover the stairs handrail whilst painting the walls..ended up huge mess as painter proceeded to varnish the stairs handrails and can see paint specs thru the varnish.. Shop around as there should be good competition out there also at moment

Was quoted €150 per day for painting and small bit of wallpapering last week.

Chilpps, the house has been recently replastered (a few years ago) and all the walls and skirting etc. are currently painted white. A small portion (approx 2.5m x 1.2 m area) of the hall ceiling has had to be replastered as it cracked quite badly a couple of months ago. So the raw plaster there will have to be painted for the first time.

We are hoping to change the colour of the walls from white to a very pale grey/off-white colour.

Seriously, you could just do this yourself over a weekend. For free + materials.

The walls are the easy bits it's the woodwork that takes time.

How many balustrads do you have on your stairs and how many years has it been since they were painted?

If you have doubts about the price of your painter get another quote but get a professional in do not get a Mickey Mouse character in because you'll be wasting our money.

I'd love to be able to do it myself as suggested by many, as clearly we would save a lot of money. But I am heavily pregnant and my partner has unfortunately injured his back and although he wants to give it a bash, I don't think it would be a good idea. I reckon the potential of more medical bills for him might be more costly in long run!! We are a right useless pair at the moment LOL!!

I think I will get some more quotes as most people have suggested and see if we can get a better deal. We definitely want a professional painter to do the job so we won't have to do it twice, but hopefully there is a little better value out there. Just could not afford that much money at the moment for just the hallway.

Thanks for all the advice guys - it's greatly appreciated as always!!

Paid 1000 for full house 2 years ago. couple of Polish lads.

I got the whole interior (walls and some ceilings) of my 3 bed semi-d painted in Jan for €1100. Sounds like your being ripped off.

I have painters I use all the time did the wholehouse bit by bit, they charge E145 for one guy or I usually get two at 290. They work 8-5 and stayed later to get the job finsihed at no extra charge. They did my hall way over a weekend one guy so it costs me E290. PM me for number cant' recommend them enough. Although they charge by day and not by job they don't take the p'ss and give you a rough estimate of how long it would take! Its a russian guy I'm based in Castleknock
