What is the best way for a young band to copyright their music and songs, all members are under 18 year's of age, and what cost might be involved?

Put a copy of your music (sheet or tape recording) into a sealed envelope then post it to yourself (do twice). Keep hold of it in its unopened state and store in a safe place. It is then copyright protected through the stamp marking. If you become successful in terms of radio play etc register with the appropriate organisations. But try to develop your sound first through social network sites such as myface or utube or bebo. Best of luck

Copyright exists automatically in an original work - you don't have to do anything with it or register it. It's existence means it is copyrighted and if someone makes an unauthorised copy of it you can then sue on it.

Copyright exists automatically as soon as the music is created. Just use the "c" symbol in reference to your work.

However, one often used way of further protecting your work is to make a recording of it, post it to yourselves via some form of signed for/dated delivery, and then don't open it. If your music is copied or ripped off in some way since that date, you can use the unopened package as evidence.

I have heard however that this has it's flaws.

Edit: Crossed with above posts

hope4711, that is incorrect...you have to prove copyright. In a court case to sue you require proofs. Hence the above mentioned process would come into play.
