Copying Access database to new computer

Need to transder a database from MS Access on old computer to new computer. Backed up file onto mem stick put into new PC but says "unrecognised file format" and can't seem to open. Have tried exporting etc. but nothing seems to work. Am I going wrong somewhere ? The database has several forms and queries attached to it and I'd like to retain these also. Thanks for any help.

What version of Access is on the old machine compared to the new pc?
Is the extension of the file .mdb? Does the error message occur when you open the file from file explorer or when you open Access and then try to load the file?

Its the same version of access from the original MS Office 97 CD ( old I know but it works fine for what I need ).

Yes, the extension is .mdb.

Get the message when I try and load the file after opening Access.

May be worth attempting a repair under the Tools -> database utility..
