Converting existing house to sustainable heating

Hi All,
I'm buying a house which is 30 years old with Gas Heating. The system is so old it will need to be replaced so i'm considering a sustainable heating option for example wood pellet or solar power. All the threads I could find seemed to involve new builds. Has anyone any experience of changing the system in an existing house? Also it's approximately 1100 square feet, most people who've commented on these heating systems had much larger houses, Would it be impractical in a house of this size?

the first thing you need to look at is how to trap the heat once its generated within your house..... you need to look at insulation.

do you know if any insulation exists in the house?

if you can get your insulation up to optimum levels then whatever heating system you go for will work far more efficiently.
