Contributory Negligence - what happens to the proportion of award?

A question I asked in school today ...

In a case where there is deemed to be "Contributory Negligence", if a financial award is made, what happens to the deducted % deemed to be the contributory proportion of the award? Or is the payment made less the deduction.

'tis made less the deduction.

if damages are 10K with 20% contributory negligence, you get 8K, being 80%.
