Contractor verification

I am looking for a Contractor to renovate my home. What is the best way to go about choosing the right one if you can’t get a referral from a neighbour, friend etc?
The shortage of skilled contractors has left the door wide for substandard contractors to operate and exploit homeowners with impunity and after hearing and reading of other people’s experience, I’m a trifle nervous of falling foul of them. Anyone have suggestions to share?

Ask them straight out for contact details of three recent previous clients for whom the did work similar to yours, and who you can talk to and/or visit.
