Contract with builder

What is the norm here - do people usually get written contacts with their builder before they commence.

I would definitely advise you to enter a written contract with your builder before getting work done.

What contract you should use depends on your circumstance but if you are using an architect just use the standard RIAI form of contract (if you contact the Royal Institute of the Architect of Ireland they will sell you one). You could also try the Construction Industry Federation of Ireland.
