I have been a customer of ESB/Electric Ireland for over 20 yr on normal rate, I found that I could obtain a 22% discount by signing up to a 18 month contract.
The contract is coming to an end and they phone me with 3 option , one was 13% discount. I asked them to send details via email or post because I could not take in all of the details over the phone and verbally sign up to a new contract especially as I have recently had a smart meter installed .
To my surprise they refused to email or post and would only do it verbally, is this legal , they said they would phone me back

Don't know if its legal but you should report them to CRU as its just not good enough from a customer service point of view.

You can look at the plans available online and your should be able to get approx 30% per year.

You don't need to switch over to the Smart plans yet if you want to stay on the ordinary plans. The Smart rates are here.

If you sign up with ESB Networks (not Electric Ireland) you should be able to see your usage and what time of use plan would suit your needs best. If you familiarise yourself with www.energypal.ie and how to download your HDF file you should find out from that which is your best option and which company to go for.

At the moment I found Energia (who I would have to say I find very efficient and customer orientated) have some good deals especially with their AXA offer. They have both electricity only rates and also duel fuel offers. You may be able to avail of the offer even if you are not insured with AXA but you would need to check that out with Energia

I followed the advise of signing up to ESB networks. They had 2 options of files to download as HDR. I inputted both.

Does this list appear correct as in best value at the moment? First time to use energy pal!

I am already with Energia for electricity only, but out of contract since start of February. Or is there something else I should be doing?

Last year, I remember I had to leave them, sign up with YUNO, before I received a better offer from Energia. Then I received phone calls and emails. Eventually they agreed €50 cash back instead of Google Nest (as do not have WiFi in house). They also backdated any changes to the the better rate, once out of contract.

Hi Acer
Does this list appear correct as in best value at the moment? First time to use energy pal!

The information that you show does appear to be right. Your usage appears to be quite low @ 2,533 kWH, the average usage quoted these days appears to be 4,500. You could try using the 'Add Custom Plan' section on energypal and inputting the 33% discount quoted by AXA and see if it makes much of a difference to the yearly figure. You appear to be getting 28% on the figures above. It is very important though, as mentioned regularly on AAM, that you check the rates for the units along with the yearly Standing Charge, more so than the discount rate.

If the yearly figure is better on the Custom Plan then maybe give Energia a shout and see if they will give you the AXA rate or something even better Mine is a Latte if you get a better deal and its your shout

You should also click on types and make sure you have the 24hr plans included in case they're cheaper. BUT, if you're already on a smart plan don't bother as you can't go back.
