Contract of Indefinite Duration

I am in the lucky position of having 2 job offers to consider in the higher education sector.
1. Good salary. 16 month contract
2. Less money. Permanent role

Both jobs have their pros and cons. I am coming to the end of a 3.5yr contract within the same institution so permanency is attractive.

I'm just wondering how CID works? If I take option1, I'll be working for 5yrs across 2 different finite roles. Am I entitled to CID then or does it only apply to consecutive contracts in the same role?

Thanks.

There’s no automatic entitlement but there’s nothing to stop you applying for a CID. You might ultimately have to slug it out at the WRC if there’s a difference of opinion.

CIDs can apply where contracts are extended to take the cumulative duration beyond the four year limit provided for in the legislation.

However, if there’s a clear distinction between the work you’ve been doing for the last 3.5 years and that which you would be doing for the next 16 months, the company could argue that the contracts are wholly different in nature and therefore not subject to the four year provision.
