I just downgraded our insurance from 40% of our buildings insurance to 30% as at 30% we have €95K insurance for contents. We are vey ordinary stuff in our house (no Habitiat buys here!) and was wondering is 100K really enough as having second thoughts about the 30% valuation. I mean 100K sounds like a lot to me. We have a 3 bed semi so not large house and we have the usual stuff.

With thanks

If you are in doubt then you need to do some sort of itemisation and estimation of the value of your contents. Don't forget that some stuff that you might think of as part of the house may, in fact, be contents. The "usual stuff" is meaningless since different people have such diffent and wide ranging budgets, tastes etc.

c. €316K for the buildings sounds potentially high. Are you sure that you're insuring for the rebuilding costs and not the market value? See the many existing home insurance threads and this SCS guide for more on this:

As club man says go into every room and do a rough tot up of how much it would cost to replace EVERYTHING. So thats furniture which is the obvious one. DVDs, consoles, games, crokery, sauce pans etc, clothes, books. The list is endless and it tots up quite quickly. Also agree with clubman that 315k buildings cover for a 3 bed semi sounds too high.
