We have recently bought a detached house in Westmeath. Would we need planning permission to build a conservatory or sun room at the side of the house which would probably be about 12ft by 10ft? Also we would also like to either build a concrete shed or steel shed at the end of the garden. The garden is about a half an acre and we are not overlooking anyone. Would we need planning permission for this as well? I would also like to know if anyone has recently built a conservatory in this area and could they recommend anyone.

I dont think you need planning permission for a conservatory or extension at the REAR of the house if it is less than 400 sq. ft. However, any alteration to the sides or front of the house requires planning permission. A phone call to the Co. Co. planning dept. should clarify the situation.

if the attic has been converted, or if there are outhouses you will more than likely need planning permission so always check with the local council first, if you go to sell the house you will need certs of compliance with building regs. and certs re exempted development
