Just looking for some help here.

I have recently split from my partner. We have 2 kids and at the moment I am back living in my parents house with the children. I am looking into any benefits which I would be entitled to now as a single parent. I am going to apply for Family Income Supplement on my own as I only work 24 hours a week and am on a low wage however I am a bit confused over the application as I am obviously going to use my parents address as that is where I am living for the foreseeable future. However my name will still be on the mortgage for the house we bought together 2 years ago. I want to get my name taken off the mortgage(which I am also confused about how to go about this) but until then will they approve my application?? I understand there is a huge backlog in applications for this also!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

FIS will be decided based on youincome. why are you confused about the mortgage issue? This is irrelevant to a FIS application.

Presumably, you have applied for One-Parent Family Payment also?

Hi Welfarite,

Thanks for coming back to me. Well I need to send in my P60 which has my old address and then the address on the application form is my parents address so I was thinking they will wonder why I have 2 different addresses. I was also confused about what way to go about getting my name taken off our mortgage but I see there is a post on this in a different thread which has made things clearer.

Would I be entitled to both payments do you know?

you are entitled to lone parent allowance, its around 245 a week for two children.
because you are working you might get a reduced rate , but the first 146 of your income is disregarded, so if you earn say, 200 a week, 200-146= 54. 54 euro is your assessable means.

so divide this by 2 ,
so 54%2=27. so your amount of lone parent paid would be 245-27=218

you would get 218 euro per week on one parent family payment.

you will also qualify for fis, this is assessed by your income.

for instance if you earn 200 a week + 218 from one parent family payment= 418 euro.

fis is 60% of the difference between your income and the limit for your two children which is 550 for two children.

therefore, 550-418=132
60% of 132 is 79.20

fis payment is 79.20

you will have a weekly income of 418+79.20=497.20

hope this was clear!
you will also need to seek maintenance from your ex, and this will be assessed for o.p.f. payment.

Hi liketoknow,

Thanks a mill for all your info, you have been a great help!!

Is maintenance classed as income for FIS purpose? When I originally applied for FIS last year I wasn't getting maintenance and was awarded a FIS payment. This year however I have managed to get XP to pay maintenance so am wondering. The information booklet I have isn't very clear on it.
Thanks
DR.

normally if your on a one parent family payment , maintenance is assesed that way.
maintenance is assessed for fis, but once you claim fis you get the same amount for 1 year, regardless of whether your income goes up or down.

so really you shouldnt have to notifythe dept until your 52 weeks are up and you go to apply again.

I've reapplied last week and included the maintenance information with the app. It was assessed for OPA, though it didn't affect it hugely as I have a mortgage so it was used against that iykwim?
