Confidence of the auditor's opinion in the credit crunch

With audited annual financial statements due early this year for the banking sector, I'm wondering how confident people will feel about the auditor's opinion in these accounts. Given the current economic climate and the intense attention on the banking sector, what issues are people expecting to arise in relation to the auditor signing off on these accounts from an investor's/public opinion?

The auditors are expected to include Emphasis of Matter statements in their audit opinions this year. Which is great when a six year old child can tell you there is a problem with the banks.
To be honest who cares about the audit opinion ,I don't see it having any real bearing on events

I would agree that their opinion will not hold a lot of weight in investors' eyes. Anyone see any potential mechanisms to improve auditor's credit in the current situation?
