Confectionery Prices on Merrion Row

I was in the very swish Spar shop on Merrion Row at lunchtime and was amazed to see the price of sweets there. Most bars were 99c but what caught my eye was that Yorkie Bars (the standard ordinary size) were €1.09 and a standard Aero Bar was €1.10!!!

Needless to say I voted with my feet. The shop was also way too crowded to raise the matter with anyone. I'm just wondering are these the dearest that anyone has seen? Once upon a time Cadbury's, Nestle etc. used to issue price lists to retailers and shops stuck to these prices. It seems that nowadays that any price goes.
 
Indeed any price does seem to go, it's a real case of prices being charged in line with what the market will bear, If they are gonna get 1.10 for the chocolate then they'll gladly charge it, but if no-one buys it at 1.10 then they'll have to reduce the price !! Scandalous price though.

Matter of interest - has this shop got a captive audience ?

Cadbury Flake - huge price differences

Not on Merrion Row but I have noticed the huge variance in the price of single regular size Cadbury's Flake at various outlets across the country.
Cheapest I've found is 66c in Tesco; most expensive was a whopping 99c in a Eurospar.
For a small value item, I consider that a huge difference.
In other shops, Flakes sell for a variety of prices in between.
I can't recall ever being charged the same price in two shops.
 
4 standard bars of Aero were on special offer in Tesco Stillorgan @ €2. So if a shop were to break up the special offer items and sell them separately @ €1.10.........
 
these special offer packs usually have a 'Not for Individual Sale' or similar clearly displayed on each item in the pack. Manufacturers are well aware of retailers inclination to try this trick...

Unfortunately that doesnt stop retailers selling them in any case and a lot of publicans are at this trick as well . Have seen it in local off licences.

The beauties of competition law - cant price fix anymore.
 
that spar is also really expensive for alcohol, though they do have a great selection of interesting beers, the centra on westland row has a decent selection of beers too and it's much cheaper

If the prices are clearly displayed, then that is not unreasonable. It's a great shop and I am sure that the rent is huge.

If all the shops charged the same price, then we would say that there was no competition.

There are plenty of shops in the area, so you don't have to walk too far to vote with your feet.

I don't think you can get your average bar of Cadbury's whole nut anywhere for less than 90p in town, in quite a few places they'll charge 99c, so the Merrion Row shop doesn't seem exhorbitant to me.
Has the price of chocolate shot up over the last 6 to 12 months ? I used to think your average bar was about 70c in a newsagent, but those days seem to be gone.

I don't think that RRPs are binding in most or all cases. If they were then I presume that the supplier might be guilty of price fixing?

Any price that the (local) market bears goes. And why not?

Well done on voting with your feet though. I wouldn't pay it either.
