Comprehensive motor insurance and driver cover

I just heard today that most standard comprehensive motor insurance policies don't cover injury or accident to the actual driver of the insured vehicle.

I always thought comprehensive cover meant all parties involved in an accident were covered.

Has anyone any experience of this? Is it really true?

Driver is not covered if s/he is the culpable party. However, the driver may have some form of personal accident cover that might be of use.

It dies not matter if cover is comprehensive, third party fire and theft or third party only.

If you think about it, if you could claim from yourself what would stop people from driving into a wall and then processing a claim the next day! As Ravima said, there is usually some personal accident cover built in to a comprehensive policy, but this usually takes the shape of a relatively small pay out for a serious injury (€10k for blindness for example).

Your motor policy primarily covers your liability as a driver or vehicle owner. You can't sue yourself. The comprehensive part of the cover provides for damage to the vehicle and other small subsidiary benefits e.g. personal accident (very low limits).

As stated above, driver liability is covered. As long as you are not at fault you are covered. There ay be a personal accident or medical benefits (cost of A&E or ambulance) built in but you cannot sue yourself for personal injuries. All the more reason to drive carefully!
