Competency Based Interview

Hi

I've got a competency based internal interview next week. Would anyone be able to recommend training consultants based in Dublin that provide coaching for this type of interview? Has anyone had personal experience of engaging the services of such companies and what was the outcome?

Thanks a mill

Carr Communications? I had a friend did some training with them and recommended it, but this was more to do with giving presentations during the process rather than in competency based interviewing per se. I would have thought a lot of what is required depends on the specification of the new position, and your ability to prove you have the skills based on your present role to fulfill the new one, but I guess you know that already. In my understanding, the "what do you want to do in five years time?" aspirational kind of interview has been superceded by competency based interviewing based around concrete examples of what you can do now.

I've done a few of these kind of interviews over the last couple of years. My advice would be to scrutinise the job description and pick out the main topics - e.g. it might mention that they want someone with strong leadership skills. Then you have to think of an example(s) where you displayed leadership skills in a given task - what you did /how you accomplished it and the outcomes - also you could be asked what would you do differently now with hindsight. For the interviews I did there were normally only 4/5 competencies that were used for grading interviewees. You should definitely start thinking of 'examples' now if you interview is next week- Carr Communications won't be able to think of examples for you as they wouldn't know your current role as indepthly as you.
Best of luck.

Find somebody who has done a bit of interviewing (ideally competency based) and do some mock interviews, getting their feedback on areas for improvements.

Communique International Training on Herbert Place (don't have the number handy). Ask for Mary.

Used their services a few years ago and did very welll subsequently. You'll probably have to come up with examples yourself which they'll thrash out with you.
