Company Car v Allowance

Which would be better to take do you think? I currently take the allowance which is €6K per annum but am considering taking the car in future. What is the BIK involved? Currently I pay ~€280 per month on repayments on the current heap of crap that I drive plus of course the petrol(no mileage allowance) , tax, insurance and other incidentals.

I think the car on offer would be a Vectra/Passat or something similar. Does it matter what kind of car it is regarding BIK? Also, if/when I return to having my own car how will this effect my insurance? Will it stay as it is or increase as I would have to change to company insurance? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the insurance
There is something about an NCB being valid for 5 years in incidences like this.
If this is not a runner some insurance companies allow a smaller discount 2-3 years

I had a company car for 2 years and have switched back to allowance when I changed jobs. BIK is calculated on the original market value of the car, so obviously, the bigger and better the car, the more BIK you pay. Personally I'm better off with allowance, but a lot depends on mileage, amount of time in/out of the office etc.

When I bought my own car earlier this year, only FBD and one other insurance co (can't remember which one) gave me NCB for my claim free driving on company policy.

How much business milage do you cover per annum? Note that Revenue exclude travel to/from your normal workplace from their definition of business travel.

All depends on your annual business mileage.

That said paying maximum BIK on a Mondeo is still far cheaper than taking a €6k allowance (before tax I assume) and driving your own equivalent mondeo!!

On the insurance front, insurers are entitled to assume that you have no NCB when you switch to your own policy. You have to cut a deal with them.

I switched from co car to my own. I cut a deal with Allianz to give me the full NCB based on a letter from the company stating that I had no accidents. No problems since.
