Re: Commute

Would you maybe consider moving to Bandon? It's not a bad little town but not as nice as Killarney. Also property prices in Bandon are very good.

Re: Commute

I would advise to stay put unless the money is seriously better. If the commute is 1.5 hours each way then that's 3 hours a day extra and 15 hours a week or 40% extra hours per week. Not to mention the stress of having to move and settle in and the extra expense on driving costs. Is the pay-rise after tax worth that ? How easy would you find it if your boss asked you to stay a bit later knowing you had a long drive home. Personally I go for quality first option.

Is renting a small place in Bandon for Mon to Fri, or staying over 2-3 nights a week an option? Again I would only see this as a short to medium term solution.

3 hours is a huge chunk out of your day - Have you dependants in Killarney? If you have family with kids, I'd have thought you should be staying put. If not, I doubt if this kind of commute is sustainable in the long term. Maybe it is something you could do for 2-3 years, but not for ever.

While the road from Killarney to Bandon is not the worst it certainly is quite poor in places.

You need to consider frost, snow and ice during the dark winter days and also fog/mist during the summer and autumn.

What time will you be starting work? It is important to consider schools en route, a few of these on your route can be seriously disruptive.

In the summer tour busses and tourist hire cars can be a problem on these roads.

Hi Killarneyguy

I was recently faced with the same predictament as you, a 1 1/2 commute each way a day to the job I wanted.... I took my time making my decision and chose the commute, I know everyone else thinks that I'm mad but its amazing how, in a couple of short weeks that one can adjust to a commute..... currently I'm commmuting 3 hrs a day but it honestly doesnt feel like it, I'm losing out on an extra hour in bed in the morning but I think the job is worth that

Can i ask if you've just recently qualified? and thats why you're considering the commmute or is a govt job?

All I can say is that the actual commute itself is not such a big a deal as everybody makes it out to be, and u can take that from someone who is doing a 3hr round trip a day..... and I definitely never imagined i would ever do a commute like this

PM if u want to

Charrai Abu!!!

Hi,
Why don't you rent a room in Bandon in a house. You'll probably get a room for 50 euro a week (inclusive of bills) which would be the same nearly in petrol cost and you could stay a few nights it you like.
Also the fact that your not around the weekend means that people renting a room who own their house would find this a benefit - have the house to themsleves at the weekend.

A long commute is something that wears you down over time. The first 6 months might be fine but as you go on you'll slowly realize how much other things you're missing out on because a) you don't have the time for them b) you don't have the energy left for them after the week. Maybe some people can handle it better than others but regardless, in all cases it gives a reduction in the quality of your life. I don't think a long commute can be recommeded for anything other than a short term period.

Does the new employer have a work from home policy, that might allow you to spend some days in Killarney each week?
