hi all,

im not sure how this works, probably a real stupid question but here goes.

i paid 2900 college fees in oct of this year, the course is approved and all that. what way does it work?

as in 20% of 2900 is 580? do you get this back?

is the tax someway something to do with your weekly wage?

Another question, i pay my bin charges 6 monthly and after the first amount paid i sent off the form for tax relief on same. Do you get this only when full amount/year paid?

i just need this cleared

thanks

Yoiu only get tax back if you have paid tax in the year. So say in 2008 you had a salary of 20K and paid 2K tax under PAYE. College fees would get you back 580 and also 20% of bin charges.

Wiat until year is over see how much refuse you paid. Fill in Form 12 (google it) and that's it.

I think I know what the answer is, but worth a try as it's a large amount:

If you pay fees for a course which will be repaid when the exams are passed, can you qualify for tax relief?

Yes - follow previous email. What if you don't pass?

But then OP would pay tax on the 20% extra that they were reimbursed- no? OP pays e.g. €1000, gets 20% back from Revenue, then passes the exams and gets €1000 from employer, even though s/he is out of pocket only 800 - wouldn't the remaining 200 would be taxed?

I should have said reimbursed by employer if exams are passed.
I'm wondering if this qualifies as at the end you wont' be out of pocket, only during the years of doing the course.

repaid by the course provider or by the employer as a congratulation gesture?

Exactly

Reimbursement of Expenses
Examination Awards made to an employee, in the context of passing an examination, or acquiring a qualification which bears some relationship to the employees duties, will not be treated as giving rise to a taxable benefit. This treatment is subject to the condition that the award is an amount that can reasonably be regarded as a reimbursement of expenses likely to have been incurred in studying for the qualification or sitting the examination.
