If someone has already done 2 years of a degree course and not paid fees and a new degree course in a different area (which was not available before) comes out do they have to pay fees?

Would they be able to get 2 years of free fees (as they did not complete the first course)

Is the degree course with the same college ?
Normally colleges make you pay for the course because the exams or at least semester by semester.

If the same college is offering the new course - I dont think they will allow you to effectively get away with 2 years of free education.

What would make you think that this might be acceptable ?

Is this coursed funded through the government in some shape or form ?

It would be a 4 year degree course in UCD, currently in an IT. It is my understanding that everyone is entitled to do a degree and get the fees paid if they are Irish or EU. My question is if someone only does two years of a degree and then changes to another degree course would they have to pay fees for the full 4 years or just 2 of the 4 years.

A call to the [broken link removed] would probably be your best bet.

When I enquired on my son's behalf quite a few years ago the story was as you state above. He was not in UCD.

You get one free go at each year, so you would have to pay for the first two years, and then you would be back to free fees for years 3 & 4.

Did you complete the previous course? If you completed the course and got a level 6 or higher qualification (even if it was only a 2 year course) then you are not entitled to further free fees.
If it's a case that you didn't finish the other course and you want to move to another one, then you should be entitled to get 2 years free fees.

The details are here:

There have been no tuition fees for Irish citizens for a while now. Registration fees are not the same and are payable unless you are on a grant.

EU citizens have to pay fees in England and Northern Ireland. No fees in scottish universities for Irish Passport holders by the way.

There are fees if you change course or have to repeat a year. Berni is right.

It's my understanding where you pay the full course fee in circumstances as above you don't pay the registration fee
