Cohabiting vs Living Alone

Hi I wonder if someone can enlighten me. For cohabiting friends, A is on disability but working part time on a scheme designed for people with depression etc, then B is unemployed. What is the max they can earn together?

A earns 300 with chronic depression and rehab part time job, B should earn 188 for jobseeker allowance but B will certainly NOT get that amount if the cohabiting friend earns 300?

My guess is that B will get nothing or will get a severely reduced allowance, and then A will lose Fuel allowance etc so I wonder would B not be better off living alone? That way B would get living alone allowance, full JSA, rent allowance, fuel allowance etc... I really cannot see how A and B benefit from cohabiting under the present welfare scheme, especially when this is a friendship, not a relationship. What I can see happening is the friendship ending because B will in actual fact be dependent on A, thus aggravating A's chronic depression etc...

Could the informed and enlightened please shed some light or agree/disagree and why.

Thanks,
ND.

Hi Berni

Yes, they are just friends. A owns the house and B has a room there. B does not pay rent but helps out in other ways like driving A wherever needed etc... But certainly not an intimate committed relationship, just a friendship. I was not sure whether cohabiting included friendship or not. They are old friends who have been living together and sharing all house expenses for 6 years now. A suffers from depression so it is a blessing to have B around.

Thanks.

It appears from your post that these are House Sharers/ Flat mates not co-habiting therefore one person's payment should not be affested by the other's
