If man and wife have a joint acc, deposit or savings, on the death of one partner can the other partner just withdraw the money. The accounts are for one partner to sign for normal withdrawals. I mean does it require a grant of probate or other legal formality just to have access to the account or is it necessary at all to inform the bank that one partner is deceased.

Sole, once the account is in both names, the surviving partner can withdraw the money if he or she wishes. I don't think it's required to inform the bank of the death of the partner. If they reside in a small community, the bank officials are often aware anyways and will offer to remove the deceased person from the accounts should the surviving partner wish to do so.
