Cleaning wine decanter

Hi all,

Put our new decanter in the dishwasher - turns out it wasn't such a good idea. There's bits caught all over the inside. I've tried rinsing it out but it's a really awkward shape and too narrow to get a brush in to clean it. Any ideas how it could be cleaned??

thanks,

M

Hi Clubman,

Not sure - are they narrow? the neck of the decanter is only about a inch wide..

A baby bottle brush might be too short. I have a large bottle brush that I bought in Superquinn a few months ago that would certainly work on any decanter I have ever seen.

Next time, rinse and swirl as soon as you have finished the wine. Wine does not stain glass unless you leave it there long enough for the liquid to evaporate.

Put a table spoonful of uncooked rice with a strong solution of salt and warm water into the decanter, put on the top and shake vigourosly. Rinse well with cold water. Failing that fill with a strong solution of white vinegar and water and leave to soak overnight and rinse well.

This is what you need. saw them in Meadows & Byrne (cork)today. can't remember the price though.
the shape of it can be changed to suit the decanter, vasically a larger version of the old pipe cleaner !

A baby bottle brush will easily fit a 1" diameter bottle. Our last one was about 8" long too so maybe that'd be long enough?

i know this may seem off topic, but you know the chrome wine bottle stoppers you can get, don't ever use these. The acidity of the wine will pit the chrome

Great advice Keith, I never realised, although in all fairness, I only have a plastic one...!!

i do a little woodturning and you can buy the chrome kits to turn them but i found out about the acidity and got a supplier of stainless steel ones

Try a fistfull of coarse sand, quarter fill the decanter and pretend it's a coctail shaker. It also helps to have just opened a new bottle.;)
