Cleaning solid oak wooden floors

We have just completed some renovations in our house where the builders have been in and out every day.

There was a lot of dust raised during this time and this has settled everywhere so we are now starting to clean up.

The existing solid wood red oak floors are looking a bit tired and dull.

I have tried hoovering and mopping with a slightly damp mop and while this has worked to some extent they are not looking as good as 6 weeks ago

Just wondering if anyone out there has any other ideas or products which they have used to buff up/restore solid wood floors which have been subjected to workmens boots and dust.

I don't think they don't need to be sanded or anything like that. Just a facelift but am obviously reluctant to use much water when cleaning.

Sounds like your floor needs more than a light clean.
The finish applied when fitted will dictate the process required to restore it to a finish it deserves. It may just need to be re-oiled. Try this site for some tips www.terhuerne.de

We had the same problem after the builders left, dust engrained in the floor boards that we couldn't get rid of by just cleaning. We ended up just re-oiling the floors, tirsome but they came up great.

Did you have to sand down the floors first before oiling them ? What did you use for this ?

Or did you just wipe down the floors with a damp cloth and then oil them ?

No sanding required as the floors were relatively new. We just cleaned the floors and then applied the oil. As our oak floors were antique colour, warm medium-dark colour, I tested coloured oils on a leftover piece and found the best match.
